There will be a Celebration of Life at 2pm on Thursday May 9th at Melville Heights, 24 Ramsgate Lane, Spryfield. All are welcome!

My Grandmother and mountain, soft as rain, solid as gold. Although she never let me forget her initial wish that I become a doctor, she was the primary supporter of my life in the arts; enabling my move to Paris to go to clown school, getting me a U.K. passport and accompanying me to visit dubious apartments up several flights of stairs in her late eighties. She prayed for me, and worried constantly about my instability, but would repeat at the end of every conversation "You have to do what makes you happy", and this constant blessing has carried me through some of my darkest days. She was also the only family member who would ask me, unprompted, about my masks (not the most popular conversation topic I guess?). To me she was the epitome of mystery, and generosity, and intelligence and charm. She spoke frankly about marriage, men, and sex, with deep humour and wisdom. She made me proud to have roots on an island who's native tongue is créole and was home to the enigmatic Dodo bird. 
In her final moments, my daughter (her great-granddaughter) and I sang her the lullabies she had taught me as a baby, and I feel this final ritual helped release the flow of love which she had directed into me back to her, making it possible for us to find our way to "goodbye". 
Au revoir, Nana. Bon voyage, je t'aime de tout mon cœur, tu vivra pour toujours dans mon esprit, et je te remercie pour la Vie tu m'a donnée.

I didn't know you that much, I enter in your familly just 4 years ago ..
But I loved you and you loved me from the begining, when Jayne and I went to Halifax to recieve a native mariage blessing ceremony... Jayne, your grand daugther, who I'm married with, is in a deep loss and I'm with her in it. You were so important in her life since she was born, and I thank you now for having been a strengthfull presence, a guide and a loving and supporting heart for her... 
Have a good trip to wherever you decided to travel.

Nana, you are my star. Shining bright with your magnetic smile and red lipstick. My favourite person to visit- to all the wonderful places you took me. How could I ever thank you for what you have done for our family . Nurtured us, fed us the best most sugary cereals, shopped for hours with us, did whatever we wanted without hesitation-even if you didn’t want to do any of it. As I’m writing this I’m walking around in a gas station after taking shelter from today’s sudden hail storm. I know it’s you saying “Hi”. I haven’t known what to write or feel until now. My head is suddenly flooded with memories of you. From such a young age you took me with you to your salon to get your hair done. You took me to the local beauty school to get your nails done. Gave me all your makeup samples from your Lancome gift with purchases. You are my true beauty guru and I learned everything from you. Thank you. I know I’m not the dentist you wanted me to be but you still supported me through all my artistic ventures. I would give anything to get a Nana hug right now so I can smell of your Estée Lauder perfume forever. For now my heart is full of memories of you that I will cherish forever. I love you. 

Beautiful walks as a family in Point Pleasant Park, trips to Bermuda, horse shows, ice cream and apple pie in Grand Pre and helping me as a young mum with the grandchildren so I could go back to school and upgrade my education. But most of all , holding your hand last week and feeling the strength and fortitude I could only dream of having at such a great age !. 

All your children and grandchildren carry on your legacy,  and your great grandbaby ' Lola'  singing Frere Jaques , will  ring forever in your heart. 

Mum,  David is there waiting for you across the seas ready for more adventures.  May your boat land on the beautiful sandy shores of your homeland. Please bring back a beautiful shell for me.

When I was a first year student at Dalhousie, back in 1972-3, I spent a lot of time with my dear Aunt Flo.  She was always open to new experiences and adventures.  One day, my Uncle Keith offered me to use his big, new motorcycle.  I was exited and jokingly asked Tante Flo if she wanted a ride to the yacht club with me.  I was only partially surprised when she said yes.  The ride out there was perfect, on a beautiful spring day in Halifax, probably late June.  The return ride, however, was a different story.  Tante Flo and I got caught in a thunderstorm.  Ill prepared for the weather, with poor visibility,  and in too great of a hurry to get home,  I drove through a 4-way stop and ended up lying my uncle's beautiful motorcycle down to avoid colliding with larger vehicles.  I still don't understand how my brave aunt and I came out unharmed.  If Uncle Keith's motorcycle was damaged at all, I don't remember him reprimanding me for it.  As for Tante Flo, she stoically got back on the bike and, on getting home drenched, said it had been a lot of fun.  We shall miss, you Tante Flo.  May your next ride be the best ever.
