It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Elsie Kathleen Flinn, nee Soucy , who passed away peacefully October 18th at the age of 87 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born November 24th, 1926 in Chemin Du Lac, Quebec. She was predeceased by her husband Frank on June 30t;, father, Albert J Soucy; mother, Margarite Pickford; step mother, Alice Soucy; and brother, Carl. She is survived by her sister, Rita Soucy.
Mom came to Mount Saint Vincent University in 1946 to study and learn English. It was here that she met and eventually married her husband Frank. It was true love that would endure to the very end. Together they raised four children. Marc, (Janet), Denis (Wendy), Lisa Knight (Rudy), Rene Flinn. Her six grandchildren were her pride and joy. Adam, Jillian MacNamara (Christian), Jacqueline, Katie, Nicole, and Stefanie. Mom took great joy in holding her first great grandchild, Flinn MacNamara.
Growing up we shared so many family outings, trips, and activities together, both in winter and summer. Family dinners were always special. Dad’s business often took him away from home so Mom became the backbone of our family and guided us with her unfailing judgment and love. Rare was a day without some encouragement and a hug. Mom’s grace, beauty, and courage will be forever with us. Her family was her life.
One of Mom’s favorite people was Father Leger Comeau (deceased) and together they formed the Halifax French Club, and she enjoyed a lifelong friendship with Father Comeau who later presided over the marriages of her children. In years past, Mom was captain of a United Way team that was recognized for gathering the most pledges for cancer research that year. Recently both Mom and Dad were proud supporters of the St. Patrick’s Church Restoration Society. They were very proud of their Irish roots.
Mom managed a very warm and welcoming home for all of our friends and always encouraged us to bring them by. She preferred to be called Elsie rather than Mrs. Flinn.
We would like to extend special thanks to the dedicated doctors, nurses and staff of 7A at the Victoria General Hospital for the wonderful care and kindness they provided Mom.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, October 29 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax (902-455-0531). A joint celebration of Mom and Dad’s life will be held at the St Patrick’s Church on Thursday, October 30th at 11 am. A reception will follow in the church hall below.
Donations in her name may be made to the St. Patrick’s Church Restoration Society, 2263 Brunswick Street, Halifax, N.S. B3K 2Y9.
