Born in Kastri, Arcadia (Greece) in 1937 to Panagiotis and Konstantina Tsuluhas, George immigrated to Canada in 1954. Out of the poverty and hardship that characterized post-war Greece, George achieved great success through exceptionally hard work, resilience, and determination.
From running canteens at the Dingle and the Public Gardens in the early years, to a 50-year tenure as co-owner of the Starlite and Armview restaurants with his brother and life-long business partner, Charlie, George became part of the fabric of the local community.
Despite his business successes, George chose a modest lifestyle and valued the simple things, especially nature, the ocean, gardening and good company. A devoted family man with a legendary green thumb, he had a knack for growing things, from businesses to gardens.
George was a proud Nova Scotian who never forgot his roots. He appreciated family get-togethers at his happy places: Queensland and Kastri. He gave lots and expected little. Many have benefitted from George’s acts of kindness, which he chose to keep anonymous. Honest and fair, George was a natural mentor.
He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, gentle nature and quirky sense of humour. George was an eccentric story and joke teller, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, who was always entertaining (though the punchline was not always clear). Not one to seek the spotlight, he was nonetheless our shining star.
George was preceded in death by his sister Matina (Tsiknias). He is survived by sisters Georgia (Panagakos) and Koula (Argyris), brother Charlie (Maria), and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom saw him as a second father: Ioannis, Panagiotis, Maria (Wendell), Peter (Evangeline), Stella (Panagiotis), Dina, Litsa (Rami), Pitsa (Mike), Georgia (Adam), Anna (Nick), Sophia (Michael), Peter (Stephanie), and many godchildren.
George, although your absence has left a tremendous void for many, your presence will always be felt. There will forever be a seat at the table for you.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 9, 6:00-9:00pm at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339, Lacewood Drive. Funeral service on Friday, September 10 at 1:00pm at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church.
