Gerry was born in Berwick, Nova Scotia, and as part of a military family, grew up in many communities around Eastern Canada.
Gerry loved his job as an advanced care paramedic. His work in the ambulance service began in 1978, and his career spanned 34 years. He was active in the union, including a tenure as president for CUPE, Local 3264, where he led contract negotiations during the ambulance workers strike of 1992. In 1997, his work took him to Saudi Arabia, where he was supervisor of paramedic services at the Northwest Armed Forces Hospital in Tabuk. He finished his career working in the Canadian Arctic, where he became known as the “paramedic who saved his own life”, after treating his own heart attack in 2009 as the only medic on site during a snowstorm.
Gerry was loved as a father, grandfather, and brother. He is survived by his sons Neil and Chris (Janet), granddaughter Emma; sisters Angela, Susan, Rachelle, Becky, and brother Joe. The family is grateful for the care provided by Dr. Grant, Cindy Bell, and the rest of the palliative care team.
A memorial service will be held at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive in Halifax on January 7 at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gerry’s memory can be made to Hospice Halifax (hospicehalifax.ca).
