Born in Codroy Valley, Newfoundland, he was the oldest son of Emmanuel and Dorothy O’Quinn. When Gerry was a young child, the family moved to New Victoria, Cape Breton where the family was raised. Sadly, Emmanuel passed away shortly after, leaving behind his wife and four very young sons.
Gerry was predeceased by his parents and wife of 58 years years, Anna. He is survived by his daughter Debbie and her husband Louis; grandchildren Kaleigh (Mike) and Cathryn; brothers Donnie (Lois), Ogonquit; Eddie (Mary), New Waterford; Mannie (Margot) Burlington; as well as many nieces and nephews. Gerry had a wide circle of friends and seemed to find someone he knew everywhere he went. He cherished and nurtured his friendships, never hesitant to pick up the phone or stop by to check in.
Gerry went to work in the #12 pit in New Waterford at the age of 15. Due to a coal mining accident at the age of 19, Gerry’s leg was amputated. He received his first artificial leg and five days later, he was dancing on his 20th birthday. This is typical of the attitude and strong will that stayed with him throughout his life. Never one to take the easy way out or make excuses, Gerry was a hard working man who also enjoyed life to the fullest. In his younger days, he could often be found on his motorcycle or ATV sharing adventures with close friends. A lover of practical jokes, many of his antics are legendary.
Gerry and Anna moved to Halifax and built their home in Timberlea. Gerry became a successful barber, and retired in 1991. Gerry and Anna purchased a large retirement property with close friends where they produced maple syrup and cultivated Christmas trees for many years. The hard work never stopped.
Gerry enjoyed a variety of hobbies including fishing, hunting, woodworking, gardening, baking, listening to Newfoundland and Irish music and playing golf. He was a washer toss champion many times over and his Cape Breton oatcakes were both a highlight of potlucks and an exercise in precision. He was an avid sports fan and often had a deck of cards within arm’s reach. Gerry ran weekly community card games through the Knights of Columbus to raise funds for scholarships, coats for children in need and for the Marguerite Centre, something he was very proud of.
Cremation has taken place. The funeral mass will take place at 11 am on Friday, November 17th at Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Upper Tantallon. In lieu of flowers, please donate your time or funds to your local food bank or other charity. Reconnecting with someone that you haven’t spoken to in a while is a great way to honour his memory.
