Trudy was the youngest of nine children born to the late Algernon Tucker and Maria (Churchill) Tucker, Bell Island, Newfoundland. Beside her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John “Jack” Emmett, son, John; brothers, Gordon, Bert, Gerald, Algy and sisters, Ruby, Hazel, Molly, Dot; great-grandson, Brennan.
While visiting relatives with her mother in Halifax at the age of 16, she decided to make Halifax her new home working as a legal secretary. It was those same relatives who introduced her to the first and last love of her life and she and Jack were married in 1951. His transfer with the RCMP Marine Division took them to Windsor, Ontario to start their married life and family. By 1955, another transfer had taken them back to Halifax where they would spend the next 15 years. Trudy felt her most important role in life was being the best mother she could be. She rose to that challenge with grace and dedication while Jack’s duty to the Marine Division took him away from home for long periods of time. Christmastime always found her writing notes in cards late into the night to be sent to friends and family near and far.
Retirement in 1971 made for another move, this time, to Summerside, PEI. Jack took up his new position with CN Marine and Trudy quickly made new friends at St. Mary’s Church where she put her faith and talents to fellowship and fundraising. A few years later saw Trudy develop a passion for contract and duplicate Bridge where she (and Jack) excelled in both the game and making new friends. She also enjoyed bowling, thrifting and going to flea markets. She often came home with more stories than treasures as she was an excellent conversationalist and people opened up to her easily. Her experience as wife to a life-long handyman served her well when they decided to build camp “Tuc-Emm-Inn” in Hampton, PEI. Many happy years were spent there spoiling their grandchildren, welcoming family and friends and hosting the annual lobster party for the RCMP Veterans’ Association. Widowed in 2009, she returned a couple of years later to Halifax to be closer to her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Ann Maria, her son, Peter (Heather) and daughter-in-law, Pat, all of Halifax. She was Nanny to eight grandchildren, Jonathan, Kelly (Jon), Erin (Paul), Shannon (Andrew), Kyle (Athena), Laura (Bill), Scott (Emily) and Hannah (Fran), and twelve great grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place with a private interment to follow at a later date when her ashes will be buried alongside those of her husband in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Halifax. Donations in Trudy’s memory can be made to the IWK Children’s Foundation.
