Gloria Lorraine Quigley

Gloria Lorraine (Monseur) Quigley passed away at home on Friday, May 10, 2013 after a prolonged illness. She was born in New York City on April 10, 1927, to Fred and Marion (Lawrence) Monseur. Gloria received her early upbringing by her maternal grandparents John and Mary Ann (Banfield) Lawrence in North Sydney, NS. Her early education was received at Regent Street School and Central High School in North Sydney. After high school Gloria moved to Halifax and worked in several positions before becoming a dental assistant for Dr. Wilfred Barnstead. On June 11, 1951, she married her husband, Dr. John H. Quigley, in Halifax. Together they moved to Toronto where John pursued his post graduate training in Eye Surgery and Gloria worked as a dental assistant. Gloria’s greatest pride was her family. She is survived by her husband, John; son Dr. Michael (Dr. Janet Wilson) and granddaughters Dr. Elizabeth, Carolyn & Julia of Montreal; son Dr. Robert (Debra Crumb) and grandson, Andrew and granddaughter, Lola of Gladwyne, Pennsylvania; daughter Paula and granddaughter, Sara & grandson, Will of Miami. Gloria was very active in setting up and running her husband’s private practice. She was also heavily involved in community activities including the Halifax Grammar School; Membership Committee of Halifax Symphony; Board of Governors of Victoria General Hospital; Victoria General Hospital Public Art Gallery; Chair Public Affairs Committee Victoria General Hospital; Chair, House Committee Victoria General Hospital; Board of Governors of Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Gloria was, as well, President of Women’s Cornwallis Progressive Conservative Association (1984-93) and President of Halifax Citadel Constituency P. C. Association (1993-96). One of Gloria’s favorite sayings was on her sundial in her much beloved garden – “Hours fly, flowers bloom and die, old days old ways pass, love stays”. Cremation has taken place under the direction of J. A. Snow Funeral Home. A memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 24, 2013, at 11 am at the First Baptist Church, 1300 Oxford Street in Halifax. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will be at a later date. Family flowers only.
