Helen Irene O'Halloran

Born in 1924 in Montreal, Quebec, she was the daughter of Dr. Hugh and Ella (Hughes) MacDonald. Her father had a busy veterinarian practice in North Sydney and Baddeck. She came to Halifax as a young woman, and soon met a handsome teacher, Dominic Joseph Campbell O’Halloran. They married on December 27, 1947.

Helen was known for her style and elegance, as well as her business acumen. She worked in the investment and securities industry for over 30 years, primarily with Cornell, MacGillivray Limited. She gave her time and talent to Canadian Martyrs Parish, where she was a faithful member. She was a volunteer at the IWK Grace Kermesse for 40 years. She loved travelling, especially trips to New York, Bermuda, Barbados and other southern locations. An excellent chef, she enjoyed hosting many parties at her former home on Chain Rock Drive. Being near Point Pleasant Park, many of her friends would stop in to visit after a long walk. She enjoyed bridge, painting, golf and bowling and led an active and healthy life. She was a lifelong supporter of Neptune Theatre, Symphony NS and the arts.

Helen was predeceased by her loving husband Dominic, her parents, two sisters and a brother, who was killed during World War II. She will be missed by her faithful bridge partner, Joyce Madden, her nephew-in-law Clark MacKenzie and the many friends she met through bridge, at Summer Gardens and the Waegwoltic Club. She was an honorary member of the extended Jones family and will be deeply missed, especially by her goddaughter, Barbara Jones Gordon, along with Richard, Sarah and Marc Gordon.

Arrangements are under the care of JA Snows Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax and a visitation will be held on May 5th, from 6-9 pm. The funeral will be celebrated by Father Owen Connolly, at Canadian Martyrs Church, on Saturday May 7th at 10 am, with a reception to follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IWK Health Centre Foundation or to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Foundation.
