Born to the late Alicia (nee Mont) and Herbert F. Wheatley, Bert grew up on Allen Street in Halifax and attended Chebucto School, eventually graduating from Queen Elizabeth High School.
Bert was previously deceased by his granddaughter, Naomi Wiegers (2000), sister Judith Wheatley (2024), and numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. He is survived by his 3 children, Kim (Norman) Wiegers, Mark (Kim Michaud) Wheatley and Jodi (Dwayne) Hirtle, and 7 grandchildren, Noah (Rev. Cate Ratcliffe), Gideon, Leo, Alicia, Benjamin, Zachary and Joey, his brother, Ross, 1st wife, C. Phyllis Carroll, and 2nd wife, Faye Forbes.
Bert spent the majority of his career working for the Nova Scotia Power Corporation where he worked in Purchasing, moving up the ranks to Senior Buyer, then Professional Purchaser after completing his Certificate in Management. During his years at NSP, many lunch breaks were spent playing cards, chess & backgammon with his NSP compatriots (Doug, Jim, Les, John and others).
Dad loved movies and would watch favourites many times. A lifelong fan of Elvis, and music of many types, he loved to dance (especially the Jive). Both Kim & Jodi will miss waltzing with him. Close friends and family will have fond memories of Saturday nights at the Derby with Phyllis & the Kirbys, or hanging with Dick & Pat Burns, or cards with Pat & Howard Smith. These evenings often ended at Look Ho Ho Chinese Restaurant, where he would be the only one ordering a hot hamburger sandwich! Similarly, Dad loved going to Swenson’s Ice Cream Parlour and would choose coffee ice cream out of the dozens of flavours, every time! Bert spent several enjoyable years in a bowling league and especially loved the 3-day weekend bowling banquets at Oak Island Inn or Old Orchard Inn.
Our father had a passion for cardinals, military history & airplanes, and old cars, especially his 1955 Chevy which he packed up along with his buddy, Carl Handspiker, and headed to Montreal for work where they spent their leisure time playing Cherry Blossom baseball with a broom!
During the 1990’s, Dad spent time as an Adult Learning Facilitator through the Halifax Library helping people to learn to read English. Having made his weekend in 1998 at Martock Ski Hill in Windsor, Bert joined the Anglican Cursillo Movement and then worked numerous weekends sharing his love of God.
We would like to send grateful thanks to the Turner Lane staff at Bissett Court, Dr Harsh Mishra, and Theresa at Glenhaven in New Glasgow.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia would be appreciated.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Snow’s Funeral Home, Lacewood Dr., Halifax, on Thursday, April 10th, with visitation beginning at 5:30pm, prayers and remarks at 6:00pm and a reception with refreshments and memory-sharing to follow.
