

GILKIE, Hilda May – 94, It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Hilda May (Wild) Gilkie on February 14, 2012 at Maplestone extended care facility, Halifax. Born in Tufts Cove in 1917, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Annie (Hunt) Wild. She lived in Hansport, Mumford Rd., and Purcell’s Cove Rd. where she spent 60 glorious years with her husband Roy and raising their two children. She is survived by her brothers Reginald (Betty) Wild, Arnprior Ont., and Bill Wild, Courtney, BC; son Ronald (Mary Barker), Halifax and daughter Marilyn (Phil) Filsinger Wolfville; grandchildren Pamela (Mike) Browning, Stillwater Lake, Jeffrey (Nancy) Filsinger, Barrie Ont., Paula Filsinger, Timberlea and Holly Gilkie, Halifax; great-grandchildren Jordan (Jared) Cole, Kingston, Ont., Clayton and Benjamin Filsinger, Barrie Ont., Peyton Filsinger, Timberlea; and great-great grandchild, Cashton Cole. She was predeceased by her husband Roy; brothers Joe, George and Frank; sisters Dorothy Wild, Edith (Cecil) MacDonald, and Ethel (Ross) Merriam; stepmother Elise, stepbrother Steve (Jean) MacDonald, stepsisters Blanche (Mike) Trennaman and Marg (Turner) O’Brien. Hilda loved to knit, especially dishcloths which she willingly gave away to anyone she fancied, particularly the nurses at the VG where she spent six long months recovering from surgery. She also liked to sew, crochet and quilt. She both worked and volunteered at Park Haven Estates for many years where she was a resident seamstress. She was a long standing member of St. Augustine’s Church, both in the Dingle and Jollimore, and an associate member of Armdale Yacht Club for many years. Special thanks to her wonderful friends Jean Pace, Pam Carter, Dona MacDonald and Father John Scott, the nurses of 9B, 3A and 4A of the VG and to the caregivers at Maplestone, for all their love and support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, Purcell’s Cove Rd., or the Nova Scotia Diabetes Association. Visitation will be held at J.A.
