

MacKenzie, Howard – 82, of Halifax passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family April 2, 2013 after a two year battle with Cancer. He was born in Hazel Hill ,Guys Co. in 1930 and was the only Child of the late Effie Spears (Casey} and the late Ernest MacKenzie. Howard was very proud to have served 30 years as a firefighter for the city of Halifax and retired at 60 as a Captain. Howard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley (White); daughter Debbie Rockola (Jimi); Sons Howie (Patty); Charlie (Corina); Ernie (Ruth); Grandchildren Maureen, Mindy, Kaitlin, Rebecca, Jessica and Nicholas. Eight Great Grandchildren; Brother and Sister in Law Jimmy and Donna White and their children Kerry and Scott; and Mother in law Kay White. Husband, Dad or Grampie as he was known was a wonderful Husband, Father and Grandfather to all of us . He especially loved the time that he spent with his family whether it was the long weekend in May or any family gathering. He especially loved music listening or playing the Guitar, fiddle and accordion at the many family outings at Whitehead or at son Howie’s cottage. He had spent many years at the Fairview Arena with all three boys being the driver, Fan or for many years a Coach in the Fairview Minor Hockey Assoc. and later with Grandson Nick. Dad liked to bowl and he and Mom both bowled in the Cape Breton Bowling league for many years. He enjoyed the many fishing trips to Whitehead with his Brother in Law Moe Cannon. He enjoyed playing cards and he and Mom played crib most nights. Howard was predeceased by his Mother Effie, father Ernest and step father Henry Spears. Father in law Jim White, sister and brother in law Joan and Moe Cannon. Special thanks to our next door neighbours Morley and Verna Cluett , Palliative Care Home Unit and to VON. Visitations will be at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax, NS, B3S 0E1 on Sunday April 7th from 2-5 and 7-9.
