MacKenzie, Howard Angus “Gus”, age 84, of Bedford, NS. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of a loving, humble, and warm husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Gus passed away peacefully, with his family around him, on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. He was born on July 17, 1932, in Shelburne, NS, son of the late Angus MacKenzie and Frances (Stanwood).
Gus was a 30 year veteran of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and upon retirement, became the first Chief of Police of Bedford, NS. Passionate and involved in his community, Gus served as a member and was past President of the Royal Canadian Legion in Bedford for many years.
Our memories of Gus go far beyond his professional duties as a community leader. There’s nothing the family enjoyed more than sitting around and listening to him regale a story or two about his escapades as a young man, perhaps his days in the RCMP Musical Ride and often about his annual trek hunting with his son and dear friends. His personality and character filled the room.
Having loved his dear wife Rae for a lifetime, they celebrated 59 wonderful years of marriage. We are empty with his passing but we celebrate his great life. Gus is survived by his wife, Rae (Winchester); children, Scott (Corinne), Heather (Donnie), Andrea (Michael) and sister, Joyce Crowell; grandchildren, Nicole, Andrew, Ben, Amanda, Caleigh, and Ryan; great grandchildren, Karson and Reese. Several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the entire medical team within the Palliative Care Ward of the VG Hospital for their warm care and support.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to J.A .Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, in Halifax. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 30, 2016 from 2-4 pm. A celebration of Gus’ life will take place on Saturday, October 1st at 2:00 pm in the Chapel. Interment will take place at Brookside Cemetery, Bedford. Family flowers only, Donations in Gus’ memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society .
