Born in St. John’s, NL to the late Joseph and Helen (Grady) Anderson, Doug is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Pamela (Young), daughters Heather (Aaron Schmidt, Ottawa) and Colleen (Rémi Brisson, Gaspé), grandchildren Estelle and Tabatha Schmidt, and Maeva and Jonah Brisson, and aunts Dorothy Grady and Florence (Finnerty) Grady. He was brother-in-law to Gail (Young) and Dick Thompson, and uncle to George (Molly) and Richard (Michelle) Thompson (Toronto).
Growing up in St. John’s, Doug attended St. Bonaventure College and was a member of Bally Haly Golf Club. He moved to Halifax with his parents in 1961 and attended St. Francis Xavier University. Pam and Doug met in the VGH Emergency where he worked summers as an ambulance driver while a dental student. Doug graduated in 1970 from the Faculty of Dentistry, Dalhousie University, where he belonged to Phi Kappa Pi fraternity. Doug was deeply committed to his many dental patients, practicing for 16 years on the Bedford Hwy and 24 years at the Clayton Professional Centre. He was active in Continuing Dental Education through Dalhousie University and the Atlantic Provinces Academy of General Dentistry. Doug held various roles on the AGD Board, was a life member of the Nova Scotia Dental Association, and a member of the Halifax County Dental Society, the NS Dental Board Peer Review Committee, and the Professional Support Program, a joint project of the NSDA, Doctors Nova Scotia, and Nova Scotia Veterinarian Medical Association. He belonged to Oakfield Golf and Country Club, and previously to Ashburn Golf Club. Doug retired in 2010, allowing more enjoyment of family, golf, travel, yard work, listening to CBC Radio, reading and keeping up with current events, and cooking. His kindness, generosity, easy-going nature, advice, conversation, sense of humour, and playfulness with his grandchildren will be dearly missed.
