MacCready, Irene Bernice, age 84 of Halifax passed peacefully surrounded by her family on June 24, 2017. Born in Lunenburg in 1932, Mom was the daughter of Marion Richards (nee Meisner) of Lunenburg and Morton Richards of Kentville. Predeceased in 2005 by her husband, Philip, she is survived by two daughters, Susan (John) Mahtab, Nancy (Alan) MacCready-Williams, and five grandchildren: Olivia and Alexander Mahtab, and Tristan, Soph and Evan Williams. Mom and Dad were transferred to Winnipeg shortly after marriage where they brought up their family for 17 years, returning to Halifax in 1975. Mom was an avid Philatelist, specializing in First Day Covers from all over the world and in particular ones of ships, Christmas, and the Royal Family. She belonged to many stamp and First Day cover clubs and societies.
Mom was also very artistic, a prolific tole painter and decorative artist, but more interested in the fun of painting and cartooning; and many friends have enjoyed her ‘Bridge Books” she designed throughout the years.
The Christmas season was Mom’s favorite time of year and she had a great collection of Christmas music boxes and decorations. Over 35 years, Mom collected lighted Christmas village houses complete with all the accessories as well as a moving train. She donated this collection to Northwood and enjoyed setting it up every December in the Northwood lobby for the pleasure of the residents there.
Mom was a proud Alumni of Mount Allison University. She had a long career as an executive secretary to many physicians/specialists over the years and retired from Henson College at Dalhousie University.
Mom always said she felt forever blessed to have her two daughters and families living nearby and being able to spend time with them. Always ready to go anywhere at a moment’s notice, Mom was a very friendly, fun person, and the life of the party. She enjoyed traveling all over the world, Red Hatters, spending time with friends, playing bridge and summers at the family cottage on Beavertail Basin, often with the company of her two ‘Gran-dogs’ – Gracie and MacBeans.
In keeping with Mom’s wishes, she has donated her body to medical science at Dalhousie University. A celebration of Mom’s life and a reception will be held on Thursday, July 13th at 2 pm, at JA Snow Funeral Home, Lacewood Drive in Halifax. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
