

Born in Ghana, Ishmael was the son of Isaac Okraku and Grace Bedford.
He was a professor of Sociology for over 35 years. He taught at the University of Western Ontario before taking a position as an Associate Professor at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. He was an avid reader and a life-long scholar. He enjoyed transferring his wealth of knowledge as a mentor not only to his students but also to his children, in whom he instilled the value of education. He will be remembered for his early role in the Ghanaian –Canadian Friendship society, which served to unite and strengthen the community. He was a wonderful husband and father who enjoyed the quiet life, taking family vacations, long walks and drives. He loved to watch sports – Saturday morning soccer, Sunday afternoon football, and basketball.
He was a man who loved God, he loved to worship and pray; he was a peace maker and a gentleman.
He is survived by his wife Nana Okraku and daughters Mary and Nandy Okraku; sister Margaret Opoku-Pare, and several Nieces and Nephews.
Memorial service will be held on Friday, May 24th, 2013 at 1:00pm at J.A Snow Funeral Home on 339 Lacewood Drive, with Rev. Christine Mears officiating.
In lieu of flowers Donations may be made to the Lung Association of Canada.
