Born and raised in Halifax, Jim was the third son to parents James Kenneth Bishop and Rita Marie. In his youth, Jim loved to draw, run, swim across Chocolate Lake, and fish the local ponds when he should have been in school. With his two younger brothers by his side, they carried out pranks on Elizabeth Drive, as young boys do. Jim had a wonderful, loving childhood.
Following the path of his two older Brothers, Jim had a career as an electrician and owner of Bay Road Electrical Ltd. He loved pointing out the places he worked, from the hospital helipad to the Christmas wreaths downtown. His Son is honored to have been his apprentice, and Jim was proud to pass on his knowledge and work ethic. Jim was a great mentor; patient and supportive. His integrity was evident with every customer he met, and he would often sit and visit with them. A modest, kind, forgiving man who treated everyone the same. He was a ‘Do anything for anyone’ kind of guys.
Jim cherished his wife of almost 30 years and together they raised their two children in Timberlea. They often enjoyed four-wheeler trips with neighbors back Maple Lake, many back yard parties, bon fires and buggy rides. Jim was a selfless Father and friend. A handy man, who loved a good MacGyver and enjoyed the simple things in life. Some of his favorite times were socials in the garage with his two closest friends; Stephen Brown and David Sturgeon. Jim sincerely appreciated the daily texts, phone calls and continued visits over the past few months.
Everyone who met Jim loved him. A fun-loving family man. A talker and story teller. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome. You couldn’t leave the house without him walking you out and chatting all the way to the car. It was normal for him to take a half an hour or more to say goodbye. A twenty-minute trip to the hardware store often ended in hours of conversation with friends he ran into along the way.
Jim was an avid outdoorsman. He was happiest being back in the woods or on the river with a fly rod and enjoyed many camp trips with the guys, especially to Ecum Secum. He also had many fond memories of numerous family vacations, shopping trips and weekends away.
The Bishop siblings, although scattered across Canada, are very close. Lovingly remembered by his four Brothers: Donald (Margaret), Kenneth (Theresa Gaudet), Peter (Chrissy), Michael (Ellen), six Sisters: Linda Shea (David), Susan Baker (Les), Debbie Taylor (Jack), Nancie Westhaver (Rick), Vicky Haliburton (Pat), Colleen LeBlanc (Ed), nieces, nephews and their families. More than family, but also friends they vacationed together, had family card games, pig roasts, New Year Eve casino nights and the best pot luck parties.
His family is forever grateful that God chose him to be Husband to Joanne (née Dionne) and Father to daughter Jocelyn (Andrew Brodie) and son John (Kenzie Reid). We will love you forever, and miss you dearly.
Funeral arrangement will be announced at a future date.
God Grant that I may live to fish for another shining day.
But when my final cast is made, I then most humbly pray.
When nestled in your landing net as I lay peacefully asleep,
You’ll smile at me and judge that I am good enough to keep.
