It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of James Alister Macdonald on September 30, 2025. “Alister” to most, “Elbows” to a few, and a friend to many, he died peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of the VG Hospital in Halifax, NS after a brief, yet courageous battle with thyroid cancer
Born March 21, 1952 in Sydney, NS to William and Sarah (Warren) MacDonald. He was raised in Cape Breton, graduating from Sydney Academy in 1970 before moving to Halifax where he spent his entire adult life, including a very happy and eventful retirement. He spent a brief but meaningful time at the University of King’s College in Halifax, accruing a lifetime of memories and friendships before starting a career with CN Rail where he worked until 2007. And as his friends well knew, he might not always have been the smartest guy in the room but he was surely the quickest.
In 1985 he would marry Debbie (Campbell), who was his best friend, partner, and loving wife for more than 40 years. Both avid travellers, they sought to see the world. Along the way they became happy hour enthusiasts and had a favourite table in restaurants and on patios around the world. Together they knew that the journey getting there was part of the trip, they knew the qualities of a good hotel, and that sometimes you should just take a cab!
His proudest accomplishment was his family. Their two children, Andrew (Savannah) and Jonathan (Victoria) were a constant source of pride and joy, as could be attested by all those who were forever hearing about them. Alister was a mainstay in the rinks, gymnasiums, and sports fields around Halifax. While he appeared to most as that guy in the stands, or down behind the glass, there were a very select few who were fortunate enough to call him Dad. To them he was their number one fan, biggest supporter, and the one whose hard work and sacrifices made so much possible.
To the staff in the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre, the Halifax Infirmary Emergency Department, and the Palliative Care Unit at the Victoria General Hospital, Alister and his family cannot thank you enough. The compassion, professionalism, reassurances, and optimism were a source of strength and motivation as they embarked on the biggest fight of their lives. To the many friends, family, colleagues who visited, sent messages, or were simply there for support in whatever way they could, please know that the family will be forever grateful, and could not have gone through it without you.
Alister is survived by his wife Debbie (Campbell), and their two sons Andrew (Savannah), and Jonathan (Victoria). His brother Keith (Corinne). There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, October 18th at J.A. Snow’s Funeral Home 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, NS from 3-6pm. All are welcome!
Donations made in Alister’s name should go to Feed Nova Scotia in lieu of flowers.
