Dad recently told us that his favourite song is “Fly Me to the Moon”. On Monday morning, November 24th, Jimmy flew.
True to his nature, he spent his last week entertaining family and the outstanding physicians and staff on 8.4 of the Halifax Infirmary. Jimmy’s gift of humour brought smiles to the faces of everyone who entered his room as he regaled us with his quick wit and colourful stories. We are deeply grateful to those who cared for Dad and for us. The tender care given to Dad and the warm hugs to us made the difference.
Our Dad’s passion was much-loved wife Betty with whom he travelled the world and tripped the light fantastic on the dance floor. Together they enjoyed many years until Betty passed away in 2003.
We, Tom Murdoch (Ann), Janet Murdoch Zive (Terry Zive) and Catherine Tilden, as well as the grand children, Jayne Murdoch-Flowers (Joey and great-grandson James), Gayle Murdoch (Devon Dayton), Adam Zive and Jessica Zive have numerous memorable moments to cherish.
Jim’s companion in recent years has been Peg Brookbank who, along with her family, will miss him dearly.
Most recently, Jimmy’s home was Parkland at the Gardens. To our Parkland family who provided not only a nourishing environment, but love, affection, devotion and compassion, we offer our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude.
One of Jim’s favourite mottos was service above self, a motto he lived. He was a member of the Halifax Northwest Rotary Club and carried on to become President, District Governor and the Rotary International Youth Exchange Chairman. He became an Honorary Member of the “Nor’west” in recognition of his contributions to the life of the club and the many years of his exceptional service on behalf of youth. The honor of the Paul Harris Fellow award was bestowed on Jimmy not once, but twice for his dedication shown to Rotary.
In earlier years, Jimmy was devoted to scouting including founding and, for 14 years, leading the 3rd Rockingham Scout Troup. He served as District Commissioner and Assistant Provincial Commissioner and was Quartermaster at the Canadian Scout Jamboree.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the QEII Foundation in memory of Jim Murdoch for the purpose of refurbishment and development of palliative care rooms on 8.4 at the Halifax Infirmary. Donations may be made by calling 902-473-7932.
We invite friends to join us in celebrating Jimmy from 2-4 on Saturday, November 29 in the Martello Wine Bar at Parkland at the Gardens (5732 College Street).
IT WILL BE A LARGE DAY.
