It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, James Pretty, age 76, of Halifax, on December 3, 2020. Jim is survived by his cherished wife of 52 years, Cynthia (Murdock); daughters, Lisa Pretty, Halifax; Jennifer (Ryan) Skinner, Halifax; grandchildren, Morgen, Olivia and Mya; sisters Karen (John) Penney, New Glasgow; Janice (Don) Kean, Halifax; Hilda Pretty, New Glasgow and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Melvin Pretty and sister, Melba Page.
Born on April 14, 1944 in New Glasgow to the late James and Hilda (Dee) Pretty. Jim graduated from Trenton High and moved to Halifax in 1967 to begin his career at Nova Scotia Power. He was a dedicated employee who started his career as a Stores Supervisor, completed two consulting assignments in the Caribbean and retired after 32 years of service as the Head of Purchasing and Chairman of the Canadian Electrical Association. He was passionate about his work, was always positively contributing to organizational change and made many lifelong friendships.
Jim was an active member of the Spryfield Lion’s Club, Past President and Life Member of the Lion’s Foundation of Canada. He volunteered many hours in the community and made a positive impact on many, especially with the Spryfield Lions Rink and Rec Centre and the development of the Captain William Spry Wave Pool.
Jim took great pride in his property and spent endless hours planning, preparing, growing, and harvesting the best fruits and vegetables in his backyard gardens. He loved his neighborhoods and was always there to lend a helping hand.
Jim loved spending time in his workshop where he would organize, repair things, and build special gifts for people he loved.
Jim always loved a nice car. He took great attention, appreciation, and enjoyment of their features and how they operated whether his own or others.
Jim loved to travel. He would plan extensive camping adventures every summer with his family, and would always book the best campgrounds, “with a pool”. When he retired, he enjoyed going to Florida during the winter season with Cynthia, special friends, and family. He would travel in Canada, the United States, Great Britain, and many countries in Europe.
He was always there for his family. He was an amazing husband, father and teacher who provided great leadership and guidance while always providing unconditional love and support. His granddaughters were his pride and joy and had a special bond with each one.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. The family would like to extend deep gratitude to the care givers of Whitehills Long Term Care Centre for their compassion and care.
