Born in Vancouver, Sandy moved around the country in his youth before settling in Halifax. He went to Dalhousie for a few years and was a member of Phi Delta Theta. Sandy met his wife and best friend Shelley at Dalhousie and they were married for 42 wonderful years. Sandy's career in the building supply industry started at Schurman Windows. He worked at many companies in the industry throughout his career, including at Cameron Ashley in his role as Atlantic Vice President, and at Castle Building Supplies in business development, from which he retired five years ago. Sandy loved to ski, fish, and golf, and he and Shelley went on many memorable adventures around the world that created memories they both cherished. Sandy spent his retirement with Shelley at "The Shire", their beautiful home on the lake. There was nothing he loved more than his family, and he shared a special bond with his "princess," his daughter, Christie, of whom he was incredibly proud.
There are many people who will be carrying him in their hearts: his wife, Shelley Welsh; daughter, Christie Herbeson; son-in-law, Adam Herbeson; grandsons, Reid and Thomas, who called him Poppa; his aunt, Sharel Ferguson; and his cousins, John, Sharen, Dawne, and Collin Ferguson, and Ric Raynor, along with their families. Sandy was predeceased by his father, Jim Welsh; mother, Irene Welsh; brothers, Randy Welsh and Andy Welsh; and his youngest daughter, Leslie Welsh. When Sandy's daughter died, her obituary wrote that she'd be painting the sunrise, and when Sandy passed on Thursday morning, Leslie's sunrise was there, full of love, to guide him into everlasting peace.
A service will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 28th in J.A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr. Reception to follow. Donations in Sandy's memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, IWK Health Centre Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
