Age 94, of Halifax passed away Thursday December 5, 2013 at the Halifax Infirmary. Just shy of her 95th birthday and with family by her side, “Mum” left us to join Dad who had departed us all too suddenly many years (46) ago.
Born in New Glasgow, she was the youngest daughter of the late Donald and Grace (Vickers) Cumming. A graduate of New Glasgow High School and the Maritime Business College, Halifax, Chris started working with the CIBC in Halifax as a receptionist and later engaged to raise her four boys. She was actively involved at St. David’s Presbyterian Church and after the passing of her husband Jack in 1967, took on the role as church secretary for over twenty years. An Elder at St. David’s, Chris was also an active member of the Ladies Guild. St. David’s held a special place in her heart because of the many lifelong friends that she made there. Mum was very musical, having learned to play the piano and violin as a child. In later years she focused on her violin which gave her much joy as she played with the Halifax Ladies Musical Club. Mum instilled a love of music in her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed her years lawn bowling at the Wanderers Lawn Bowls Club and as a member of the Waegwaltic Club, Halifax. Mum enjoyed spending the hours completing word puzzles and the newspapers’ Cryptoquote which was proudly completed daily.
She was predeceased by her husband John Crawford (Jack) and by two sisters: Miriam (in infancy) and Frances MacLean Rumley.
She is survived by her sons John Terris (Mary) of Glace Bay; Donald C (Linda) of Bedford; F. Raymond (Laura) of St. Mary’s, Ont.; and Robert C. (Denise) of Hammonds Plains. She is also survived by her loving five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A special thanks to the staff of the Berkley (Bedford) for the kindness shown to our Mother during her years living there.
Mum was fondly loved by many and will be dearly missed by her loving children, family and friends.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Chris may be made to The Presbyterian Church of St. David, Halifax or to a charity of choice. For online condolences please visit: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
