Joanne Gail Cross

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Joanne Gail Cross (Lemke) on January 9th, 2025, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Born on June 5th, 1943, in Clinton, Ontario, she was the daughter of the late Mervin and Jean (Dorward) Lemke.

Joanne was a devoted wife to her high school sweetheart and husband of 55 years, Angus (predeceased) and mother to Wendy (Ken Gillespie) and Paul (Young Ae Cross) and “Grandma” to Matthew , Leah and Fiona. She is survived by her sister, Jean Game, and predeceased by sister, Heather Cope.

Joanne will also be deeply missed by her neighbours, family and close friends. A graduate of Brockville General Hospital in 1964 as a registered nurse, Joanne began her career in Churchill, Manitoba. After several moves, her career expanded into specialized work with and Alzheimer's disease research and social work.

In addition to her family, Joanne enjoyed pool days with Alex and Sharon, boating, travelling, tending to her flowers, reading and challenging crossword puzzles. She and Gus often enjoyed afternoons on their deck overlooking the Bedford Basin, sharing a “libation” and lively conversation with Harrison and Colleen.

Joanne took great joy in challenging her grandchildren with complex words, fostering their growth and curiosity. She was extremely proud of all three of them and in her eyes they were perfect. Her independent and caring nature touched the lives of all who knew and loved her.

Joanne’s memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to those she held dear. The family extends our heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Palliative Care unit at the Victoria General Hospital for their exceptional care and kindness.

A future celebration of life will be announced in the near future, where friends and family will gather to share stories, memories and laughter. She will not be forgotten.
