Joanne was born on July 22, 1948, in Newcastle NB, the daughter of John and Ruth Casey. Joanne is survived by her husband of 41 years, Dr. Peter Joules, her children Richard Joules (Rion Microys), Tara Raymond( Jacques Raymond), Ryan Joules(Christina Joules) and Carla Joules( Ryan Spencer). Her greatest joy was being “JoJo” to her six grandchildren Matilda, Agnes, Elizabeth, Alan, Elias and Hudson. Jo was truly the middle child in her family of five sisters, Maureen Morrissy (Paul Deceased), Kaushalya Casey , Ellie Casey and Barb Casey (Lisa MacIntosh). She was “Aunt Jo” to her nephew Sean Morrissy, and nieces Kate Morrissy Sheppard and Cameron Wilke Casey, Great Aunt Jo to Liam, Emma, Peyton and Alex and was her forever sister-in-law to Linda Wilke.
After graduating as an X-ray technician in the mid sixties, Jo wanted adventure and headed away. She worked in Montreal and Toronto, before taking off to the Bahamas. She quickly learned to sail, winning more than a few trophies as crew and sailor of the year. Jo eventually moved to the UK, had a short stint in Libya and Wales, but worked in London, until Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher revoked thousands of work visas! Jo returned to Canada in 1980, working at the VGH and IWK Health Centre in Halifax, and marrying Peter in 1984.
She spent her retirement years living in Mahone Bay - playing bridge and volunteering for the Scarecrow Festival and the Seniors Centre. Mahone Bay was her happy place. She loved living on “The Hill” and was blessed with incredibly supportive neighbours and friends. A special thanks to neighbours Chelsey and Nick, Greg and Connie who were beyond devoted to Jo during her long illness. Jo’s eldest sister Maureen was her constant telephone companion and cheerleader during her three-year cancer battle. Her children and daughters-in-law were always around, setting up computers, TV’s and laptops, painting, building decks and doing yard work.
Last but not least, Charlie, her golden doodle, was her beloved companion and remained by her side until the end.
Rest in peace, Joanne, you will be deeply missed.
A celebration of life will be held at Snow’s funeral home in Halifax on Monday May 19th from 1-3pm.
Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society are appreciated.
