It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Josephine Pauline Buchanan, fondly known as Polly, at the age of 97 on January 11, 2024, at Northwood Center's 7th floor in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Born and raised on a Delhaven farm in Nova Scotia, Polly was the cherished third daughter of Donald Forsythe and Josephine Eliza Robinson.
Polly pursued her passion for weaving at Gaelic College in St. Ann’s, Cape Breton, following her graduation from Halifax School for the Deaf. Notably, she collaborated with Bessie Murray, the president of the Halifax Weavers' Guild, contributing to the design of the iconic Nova Scotia tartan in 1953. A dedicated homemaker and mother of three girls, Polly later embarked on a ten-year career at the Bank of Nova Scotia after her daughters left home.
Known for her adventurous spirit, Polly explored Europe, Jamaica, Hawaii, and Thailand. A skilled puzzle enthusiast, she earned the endearing title of "Puzzle Queen" among her peers. Polly found joy in playing bingo, cribbage, and SkipBo cards, actively participating in various community activities with her Deaf friends.
Polly's greatest source of happiness was her family, and she devoted herself to caring for her grandchildren. Survived by her daughters Helen Hilton (Chris), Carolyn Fitzgerald (Wade), an angel, and Beverly Buchanan (Paul), Polly leaves behind a legacy of love. She is also remembered by her seven grandchildren, Corey, Cody, Amanda, Brittany, Jarad, Nicole, Joey, and five great-grandchildren, Ava, Lennie, Stella, Tatum, and Meadow.
In the late spring of 2024, Polly will be laid to rest beside her late husband of 38 years, Leonard William Buchanan, in Prince Edward Island. The family extends special gratitude to the caring staff on the 7th floor of Northwood Center for their unwavering support.
A celebration of Polly's life and a memorial service will take place on Sunday, January 21, 2024, from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr, Halifax, Nova Scotia. The service will commence at 2:00 PM, followed by refreshments.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Polly Buchanan Legacy Fund, supporting communication access for Deaf individuals residing in Northwood. Your contributions will honor Polly's commitment to fostering inclusive communities.
