Affectionately known as Ken, Kenny, Buckwheat, and some other colorful words, he was born July 4, 1942, in Halifax to the late Francis Bellefontaine and Helene (Shubley).
Too smart for this own good, he decided to leave school at an early age and join his family in working at the Halifax Port Authority. A proud longshoreman, Ken dedicated 50 years to working as a checker, and then as head checker at Halterm container terminal. He was a highly respected boss that many continue to talk about to this day. Hard pressed not to find a Bellefontaine working at the container terminal in Halifax, he enjoyed working alongside his brothers, son, nieces, and nephews over the years.
Known for his infectious smile, kind soul, and gentle demeanor, he will be forever missed by his loving wife of 31 years, JulieAnne (Lloy), and two daughters Ronni and Darcie, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends.
He is survived by his sisters Sharon (Richard) Mills and Helen (Steve) Anderson. Predeceased by his son, Kenneth Bellefontaine Jr. (Dawn); brothers, William (Maureen) Bellefontaine, Robert “Sunny” (Annie) Bellefontaine, Donald (Shirley) Bellefontaine; and sister Phylis “Rosie” (William “Charlie”) Everson.
There was no place Ken enjoyed more than spending summers at his cottage- Narrowsreach- with family and friends, where too many drinks and so many laughs were had. An avid lover of crib, rummy, and poker, his smile could be seen for miles when winning your money. Along with card games, there was nothing Ken loved more than watching a movie. Even if he couldn’t remember that he had seen the movie 10x before, he still enjoyed the watch each time. He will live on in every laugh that slips out when we need it most, every shot of fireball taken too quickly, and every cigarette burned down just a little too far.
Proud to have daughters as nurses (which he made sure to tell anyone who would listen) they were able to care for him at home, alongside his wife, until his final breath. A big thank you to Dr. Colin Hebb, and the home palliative care team for helping to make his last days at home possible. We would also like to thank our friends, family, and neighbors for the immense and loving support you have shown us during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Nova Scotia Hospice Palliative Care Association.
A funeral mass will be held Friday, December 5, 2025, at 2:00pm at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, 18 Scholars Road, Tantallon. A celebration of life will follow on December 5, 2025, at 4:30pm at Freemans Little New York- Fairview, 367 Dutch Village Road, with parking accessible on Deal Street at Cambridge Accounting.
Raise a glass, share a laugh, and remember him with a smile.
