Kenneth Alfred Carter, born on September 6, 1936, in Halifax, the beloved son of William J. Carter and Helen (Darrach) passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, at Maplestone Enhanced Care after a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Ken is survived by his three daughters: Karen (Michael Nichols), Dawn (Bob Simlett), and Cathy (Phil Chiasson). He was a proud grandfather to William and Ben Chiasson, who brought immense pride and joy to his life. In addition to his parents, Ken was predeceased in 2000 by his cherished wife, Gerry, and his brother, Billy, who passed away in childhood.
Ken grew up in Halifax and treasured his childhood memories in Herring Cove with his Darrach aunts, uncles and cousins. Ken and Gerry raised their family on Homecrest Terrace, where they were blessed with wonderful neighbors and friends. He was an electrician and owned and operated Carter & Smith Limited with his wife, Gerry, until his retirement. A proud alumnus of St. Mary's University and a lifelong learner, Ken achieved numerous professional milestones, including obtaining his Real Estate License, FRI (Fellow of the Real Estate Institute), and certification as a Real Estate Appraiser. He even built a few homes throughout his career.
In his youth, Ken was an avid sailor and a long-standing member of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. He eagerly anticipated the Marblehead to Halifax race , where he volunteered for many years and once served as Chairman. In his retirement, Ken enjoyed spending time at the Squadron, socializing with his friends at the "round table," and looked forward to his Tuesday lunches with friends at the Armdale Yacht Club.
Ken was a dedicated member of Bethany United Church and took great pride in his contributions to the planning and building committee of the Fellowship Hall in the early 2000s. While Ken achieved many remarkable accomplishments in his life, he never hesitated to make it known that, above all else, his family was what mattered most to him. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who, along with Gerry, instilled strong values in his children.
Karen, Dawn and Cathy extend their heartfelt thanks to Maplestone Enhanced Care for their excellent and compassionate care over the past seven years.
A funeral service will be held on Friday January 17, 2025 at 10:00am with a reception to follow in J. A. Snow funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, NS.
