Skeir, Laura May (Anderson) – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Family Matriarch, our Mom, on Monday, September 7, 2015, at the age of 95, surrounded by family and a room full of love, just as she would have wanted it.
Born to the late Samuel and Belbina Anderson of Hammonds Plains, and the wife of the late Wendell Skeir, Mom lived a long, full, spiritual life. She was a wonderful wife, and a great Mom to Clarie, Gwen, Joey, Patsy and Wendell. Mummy’s family was her pride, and being surrounded by us brought her the most joy. She and Daddy lived by the motto “A family that plays together, stays together”.
Mom became a Jehovah’s Witness in 1950 and was loyal to her death. In the mid 1940’s during a trip to Boston, Mom was so excited by a Women’s Group there that she returned home and founded and organized a group of women called “The Friendly Girl’s Club”, of which she was Treasurer. This group of women organized various fundraisers in the black community, using the funds to assist those who were sick in hospital, bedridden, or who were unable to meet their needs.
Mummy worked for years at the Wandalyn Motel and Chateau Halifax in the capacity of Housekeeper and Housekeeping Supervisor. Our Mom will be greatly missed by those she leaves behind, her children, grandchildren (25), great grandchildren (28), and great great grandchildren (8). She is survived by daughter, Patsy, Halifax; sons, Wendell (Velma), Halifax; Clarie (Sharon) Toronto; adopted grandson, Dana; stepson, Winston (Gracey) Brooks, Dartmouth; sisters, Constance and Ulah, Boston; brother, Forrester, Halifax; daughter-in-law, Mary Alice and special friend, Carol.
Predeceased by her husband, Wendell; daughter, Gwen Parsons; son, Joey; sisters, Frances and Audrey; brothers, Lesley, Ansel, Elliott, Nelson, Keith, Spencer, and Troy.
Special thanks to her caretakers over the past 14 months at Maplestone Nursing Home. Cremation has taken place there will be no visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at J.A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, Monday, September 14 at 1:00 pm.
Donations in Mom’s name may be made to either the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society.
