

It is with great sadness that the family of Laurie Alteen announce his passing on March 17, 2013 at his home in Bedford, NS, at the age of 85 years surrounded by his wife Barb, his children and grandchildren. Laurie, in his adopted Newfoundland, was a well known jeweler and respected member of the community of Grand Falls-Windsor. After marrying Barb in 1996 they moved to Bedford but continued to ‘winter’ in Newfoundland until the last few years. Laurie leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his wonderful wife of 18 years, Barbara; his children: Louis (Yvonne), Grand Falls-Windsor; Larry (Debbie), St. John’s; Kathy (Glenn Reid), Halifax; step-son Rob Dawe (Mary Lou), Antigonish; his grandchildren: Patti Alteen (St. John’s), Joe Alteen (Kingston); Sarah Alteen (Fredericton); Laura Alteen (St. John’s); step-grandchildren Christine (Justin) Williams (Edmonton) and Robert Dawe (Edmonton); sister Muriel Michael, Charlottetown, PEI; brothers Fred Alteen and Louis Alteen, both of Corner Brook; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Sophie and Louis Alteen; sisters Viola Salhaney and Lillian Ritza; brothers Nick, Waldo and Douglas; and first wife Betty (Phillips). Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Tuesday, March 19th, 2013 at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, B3S0E1 (455-0531). A service in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Victorian Order of Nurses. Laurie’s family wishes to thank the members of his medical team for their extraordinary care which allowed him to take his final journey at home.
