

MOFFATT, Lawrence Arthur, 90, Halifax, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 30th, 2011, in the Hants Community Hospital. Laurie (Gramps to his grandchildren), was born in Amherst on February 12th, 1921. He is survived by his son Ted (Sheila Barling), Fall River, step-son David Thomas (Valerie), Wolfville, grandchildren Angela Anderson (Marty), Edmonton, Stephen Moffatt (Wendy MacKay), Dartmouth, Greg Moffatt (Matt Rice), Hammonds Plains, Susan Moffatt, Waterville, step-grandchildren Andrew Thomas, Toronto, Ashley Thomas, Halifax and a number of great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father Walter, mother Grace (Robb), brother Ralph, first wife Marjorie Rose (McDonald), wife Mabel Emily (Thomas) (Warner) and daughter-in-law Judy Moffatt. He lived in Amherst and Boston during his youth and moved to Halifax in 1941 to serve in the Provost Corps of the Royal Canadian Army. Upon discharge after the war, he apprenticed as a printer with the Halifax Chronicle Herald working as a compositor, typesetter and proofreader until his retirement in 1986. Laurie recently received his 50th Year Jewel from the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Fairview and John Albro Lodges. For many years, he sang in the choir at St. James United Church in Dartmouth and more recently, was a member of Fairview United Church. Following his retirement, Laurie and Mabel travelled extensively around the world and made many road trips throughout North America. He had a great sense of humour and enjoyed singing, playing the accordion and harmonica, bridge and other card games, reading and watching General Hospital. He never missed family occasions. Viewing will be held at J A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax, from 4 pm until 7:30, on Thursday, January 5th, followed by a Masonic Service, to which all are invited. A Celebration Service will be held at Fairview United Church, Dutch Village Road at 2 pm on Friday, January 6th, followed by refreshments in the Church Hall. Cremation and Interment will occur later.
