

Lawrence Bernard Murphy passed away peacefully Friday, March 2, 2018, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, at the age of 91, surrounded by family. He was the son of Thomas and Mary (Barclay) Murphy. Larry grew up in Halifax and attended College Street school, Saint Mary’s University, and finally Nova Scotia Technical College where he studied electrical engineering. In1950, he started his work career in the G.E. Test Course. He joined the Nova Scotia Light & Power, moved to Ferranti Ltd. and then Fowles and Bennett. In 1959, Larry joined the Nova Scotia Power Commission which later became the Nova Scotia Power Corporation, where he was Manager of the Transmission Division. He retired in 1986. Larry was an active member of his parish, St. John the Baptist. He was an avid sailor. He sailed competitively in his youth with his brother Tom and continued to enjoy sailing with family and friends on boats large and small, until well into his 80s. He loved the outdoors, making treks with friends to Colpitt Lake as a young man, and exploring the beaches, lakes and waterways of Nova Scotia his entire life. He enjoyed salmon fishing trips on the Margaree. Larry became the caretaker of the Murphy family lineage. He instilled an deep appreciation for the family’s Irish roots in his children and grandchildren. Larry’s family and friends will carry with them the memories of a man whose humour, caring spirit, sense of duty and great family love touched them all and made their lives very rich. He is survived by his loving wife, Claire (née Strachan), and children, Tim Murphy, Anne (Hubert) Ryan, Maureen (Ted) Kozik, Erin (Murray Stinson) Murphy, Helen (Jens Drees) Murphy, Claire (Paul) Holt, and Kevin (Nancy) Murphy, as well as his grandchildren, Sarah and Jennifer Murphy; Emma, Ben and Laurel Kozik; Haley and Peter Ryan; Lauren, Sean, and Maureen Murphy; Daniel, Nicolas and Noah Drees; and Rachel and Michaela Holt. Larry was pre-deceased by his brothers, Paul (Marie) Murphy, William Murphy, Frank (Mary) Murphy, Tom, (Marilyn) Murphy, and sisters, Joan (Bill) Conyers, Clare (Don) Carten , Nora (Edward) Connolly, and Helen Murphy.
Visitation for Larry will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at J.A. Snow Funeral Home 339 Lacewood Dr. Funeral Mass will be at St. John the Baptist Church, 126 Purcell’s Cove Rd. at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 7, 2018.
