

BURKE, Margaret Josephine (Burkie) – 102, of Halifax, passed away on August 29th, 2011 in Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Building, QEII. Born in Mabou, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah (Murray) Burke. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Convent, Mabou and the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing. After graduating, she remained on the staff as an Assistant Supervisor of the Operating Room. She joined the Canadian Army Medical Corp. in 1940, serving in Canada, England, France and Belgium. On her return home in 1946 to Halifax, she joined the Department of Veteran’s Affairs at Camp Hill Hospital where she remained until retirement. She was past president of the Nursing Sisters Association of Canada, Halifax Branch. Margaret was an avid reader, enjoyed bridge, knitting and going for walks. She was predeceased by her brothers Alex, Thomas, John, James, William and David; sisters Annie Cosman, Catherine McIsaac and Mary Moore. Funeral service will be held Thursday, September 1st at 11:00 a.m. in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Halifax, Father Owen Connolly officiating. Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lwr. Sackville.
