TERRIO, MARIE THERESA- It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Marie passed away quietly, surrounded by loved ones, at the QEII Hospital on February 13, 2012, after a long courageous battle with multiple sclerosis. Born in Halifax on February 22, 1934, she was the daughter of Ethel Terrio (Slaunwhite) and Edward Terrio. Marie was a generous, caring, soft-hearted soul who spent much of her life looking after others. Marie began her working career as a stenographer with the Canada Department of Agriculture and moved on to become a Primary Products Inspector with that Department, remaining in that position until her retirement. Much of Marie’s early life was spent involved with women’s softball in Nova Scotia. As any historian of women’s softball in Nova Scotia can attest, Marie was one of the greatest female pitchers in Nova Scotia as evidenced by her photo in the NS Sports Hall of Fame. Marie’s softball career included many years as a starting pitcher for the historic Brookfield Elkettes as well as the top pitcher for the Nova Scotia women’s softball team at the first summer Canada Games which were held in Halifax in 1969. In later years Marie’s love of softball led her to coach girl’s softball teams in Halifax. Marie loved sports of all kinds, was an avid bowler and loved to cheer on the Toronto Maple Leafs. In later years, when her MS slowed Marie down, she found joy in the simple pleasures of life; watching her favourite TV shows including the Friendly Giant, Lets Make a Deal and any sporting event, but more than anything simply being with her family. For a large part of the last two decades Marie was lovingly cared for by her sister Florence (Fudgie) and Fudgie’s husband Denny Keeping. In her last year of life, Marie had many devoted family members assist with her care including Donna, Wendy, Helen and Linda as well as the wonderful staff at the Dartmouth General Hospital and Northwood Centre. A special thanks to Ward and Jonathan at the QEII Emergency. Marie is predeceased by her father and mother, sisters Kathleen (McNeil) and Ethel, brothers Roy, Frederick and Reginald. She is survived by her sister Shirley (Stupar), Alberta, Florence Keeping, Dartmouth, and Helen Terrio, Halifax. Marie is also survived by her nephew, Larry Terrio, and niece, Linda Kirby (Terrio) who were loved and cared for by Marie all of their lives. Marie is also survived by many other nieces and nephews. Marie was too well loved to ever be forgotten and will be painfully missed by her family for the rest of their lives. Visitation will be held at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, on Monday, February 18 from 7-9pm . Funeral service will be held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, 6351 North Street, Halifax, immediately followed by a reception in St. Theresa’s Church Hall. Burial to follow at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Sackville. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the MS Society, 109 Ilsley Avenue, Unit 1, Dartmouth, NS, B3B 1S8. Marie now rests peacefully with all the angels in the arms of her Mother in heaven.
