In her one-hundredth year, Mary’s “life force” was awe-inspiring until the very end.
Kind, capable, comedic, compassionate, confident and faith-filled, Mary exuded warmth, joy and love. Always loving and present, her life began on an idyllic family farm overlooking St. George’s Bay. She grew up in Harbour Centre and later spent her summers there with family in breathtaking Antigonish. Predeceased by siblings who were her dearest friends, Donald, Joseph, John B. Chisholm and Veronica MacKenzie.
Mary married William Patrick Cusack in 1954 and together they danced their way through life’s joys and challenges. Their love, laughter and shared sense of humour—their glue. Together they built and ran their own insurance agency in Halifax.
That industry was very different from Mary’s training in dress design in Montreal. Those skills, though, were often called upon as Mary made countless dresses and outfits for her four daughters: Pauline (Barry Stuart), Vicky (d. Ronald Marrs), Donalda (Morrow Scot-Brown), Leanne (Joel Haslam). How many times was she pressing a hem as the girls raced out the door?!
Mary has been waiting to dance with her beloved Willie again. He passed in 2018. They will be together at Holy Cross Cemetery in Halifax near their son, John William.
So many people held a special place in Mary’s gorgeous heart. Love and thanks to her many friends and relatives over the years. Love to her grandchildren, Rory and James, and her adoring nieces & nephews. Special thanks to “Saint Theresa” Sullivan, a dear buddy to Mary in her final years, and to Carol Conrad of Parkwood Home Care for her extraordinary engagement & care. Love and thanks to Mary’s Irish goddaughter, Patricia Corbett (Andrew) with whom she had a true heart connection.
Ultimate gratitude to Mary’s indefatigable and loving primary caregivers, Donalda, Morrow and Bella who enabled Mom to have a beautiful life and passing at home; a wish, and a reality, for both of our parents. We also extend heartfelt thanks to Doctors Gwynedd Pickett, David Clarke & Syed Ali Imran who gave Mary ten extra years of sight and life because they saw her—not her age.
For those fortunate enough to have received a pair of Mary’s famous and colourful hand-knit socks, you know you are elite members of the “Mary Cusack International Sock Club.” A style-trailblazer from head to toe, others will remember Mary’s glamorous signature hats.
Mary always knew the right thing to do, and for her lifetime, did the right thing, whether it was giving a child a much needed hug, or lending a helping hand to a person down on their luck.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday September 13, 2025 at 11am in Saint Benedict Parish, 45 Radcliffe Drive, Halifax.
Mary, we know you are being welcomed into Heaven just as you always welcomed anyone who arrived at your door. Lipstick on!
