Our mom, sister and grandmother, who we so deeply love, has been called to Heaven. Surrounded by the love of her family, Mary “Marguerite” Haley passed away February 11, 2011 gracefully and with dignity just as she had lived her life.
Born in Antigonish on October 13, 1919, she was the eldest daughter of the late John Hadley and Mary Lillian (MacDougall) MacDonald. She married Martin Haley in 1941 and together they raised five daughters: Anne (Dan McMullin), Glace Bay; Lois (Dale Smith), Halifax; Lynn (Peter Bowditch), Bedford; Jean (Donald Montminy) Ottawa; and Irene (Glen Lane), Halifax. In addition to her daughters, she is survived by brother Bert (Helen) MacDonald, Antigonish; sisters Irene (Frank Dempsey), Pointe Claire, Quebec; Audrey (Lorne Mitton), Bobcageon, Ontario; grandchildren, Lois (Darryl Paquette), Lynn (Frank Robblee), Ronnie Hardiman, Claire and Graham Bowditch, Andrew and Brendan Smith, and Allison and Bobby Montminy; great grandsons, Linden and Owen Paquette and Rowan and Davis Robblee; and 45 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Martin in 1997, brother Hadley MacDonald, sisters Geraldine Chisholm, Lillian Connolly and Jean Graham.
Mom’s legacy is the love she bestowed upon her family and dedication to her faith. She was a devoted mother, wife and friend and lived her life with grace, wisdom, dignity and discretion. She will be missed greatly but we are forever grateful for having had such a loving mother. Our hope is to pass her legacy on to our own children and grandchildren.
Her birthplace, Antigonish, always held a special place in her heart. We will cherish the stories about her childhood growing up with her Daddy, Mama, sisters and brothers, who she loved so dearly.
Visitation will take place 2-4 and 7-9 on Monday, February 14 in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday, February 15 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Agnes Church, Mumford Road, Halifax. Reception will follow. She will be laid to rest with her husband in St. Ninian’s Cemetery, Antigonish at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the VON, Heart Failure Clinic c/o QEII Foundation, or the Palliative Care Unit 7A VG Site. Special thanks to the staff of Melville Heights, Nurse Practitioner Roz Benoit of the Heart Failure Clinic, the Palliative Care staff, the VON, and her wonderful caregivers Shirley Thomas, Penny MacKay, Ruth Bolivar, Linda Izzard and Carol Cox.
