McDonald, Mary, died September 24, 2019, within one week of her 89th birthday. Born in Tarbolton, Ayrshire, Scotland, she was an Arts graduate, Glasgow University (Class of 1951). With her husband and children, she immigrated to Canada in 1967 and lived successively in Montreal, Dartmouth and Halifax.
Mary loved being a teacher and taught in West Africa, Scotland, Montreal and at Bel Ayr and Brookhouse schools in Dartmouth. She was a keen member of the Canadian Federation of University Women (C.F.U.W.), a national women’s organization that strives to promote equality, social justice, fellowship and life-long learning for women and girls. Mary enjoyed playing clarinet with the Tupper Band and Ron MacKay’s Tuesday night band. She appreciated music – including annual attendance at the Kiwanis Music Festival and being a regular subscriber to Symphony Nova Scotia. Mary helped out with the annual Fort Massey Christmas Tea and Sale for many years and really valued the fellowship of the Fort Massey Women’s Coffee Group.
Dearly loved and forever missed by her husband, Angus; adult children, Alan (New Zealand), Lindsay, Alison and daughter-in-law, Catherine (New Zealand). Mary was proud of her two New Zealand grandchildren, Finn and Katy McDonald.
