Maureen Patricia Lanigan (Parsons), peacefully passed away on July 18, 2025. Maureen is predeceased by her Mother, Elizabeth (Peters) and Father, George Sr. Parsons. As well as her brother George Jr. (Theresa) and sister Geraldine Carter (Ken). She is survived by her two brothers, Lloyd (Anna) and Brian (Valerie).
Nana was a beloved sister, aunt, wife, mother, and Nana. She was born in Argentia, Newfoundland on March 31, 1939. And if you ever had trouble remembering her birthday, she’d proudly remind you that Newfoundland and Labrador joined Canada as the 10th province on her 10th birthday.
Nana was a proud Cape Breton Newfoundlander. Nana spent many joyful years in North Sydney, where her spirit was deeply rooted.
In her early 20s, she moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, never expecting the remarkable journey ahead where she met John “Jack” Lanigan. Together they built a home full of laughter, love, and devotion for almost 62 years.
Maureen and Jack raised four children; Debbie Dunston, Kevin, Brenda, and Coleen Opie (Kevin). She was Nana to Jacqueline McNeil (Riley), Cailyn, Brett, and Alexandra, and Great-Nana to Julianna, all of whom she showered with unconditional love and were her greatest pride.
Nana was truly the light in every room. Her sparkling blue eyes, radiant smile, and quick wit lifted spirits and brought people together. Her love for family was unwavering and meant everything to her. She hosted Sunday suppers at her house every week so all the family could get together and talk about their week ahead. And as an avid baker, she always made sure there was something sweet made for dessert.
Nana always welcomed everyone with open arms and hugs that made friends feel like family.
She worked for the Halifax Children’s Aid Society for over 30 years where she made friends with co-workers that lasted a lifetime.
A few years ago, Nana was met the cruel reality of dementia. Watching the woman we loved so deeply slowly slip away was heartbreaking but through it all, her spark and spunky spirit continued to shine right to the very end. Thank you to all the staff at the Berkeley at both Pepperell and Gladstone locations.
We will miss her forever, but we find comfort knowing she’s at peace; probably “doing the twist” from heaven.
Thank you for everything, Nan. Your legacy of love, strength, and laughter will never be forgotten. We’ll “love you a bushel and a peck” forever.
In lieu of flowers, we encourage donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada can be made in memory of our beautiful Nana.
A wake will take place Wednesday, July 23 from 6-8 P.M. at J.A. Snow Funeral Home. The funeral will take place Thursday, July 24 at 11 A.M. at Saint Thomas Aquinas followed by a reception.
