It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maxine Victoria Schwartz (nee McGinn) of Hubbards on March 12, 2026, at The Windsor Elms Village in Falmouth, NS. This had been her home for the past two years. Born in Halifax on September 26, 1929, she was the only child of the late Sydney McGinn and Elizabeth (Bessy) McGinn (nee Hubley).
She was predeceased by John (JR), her loving husband of 61 years. She leaves behind her son Victor (Linda, nee Dorey), their children Jennifer, Elizabeth and Jim; her daughter Jill (Andrew Cochrane), their children Shea (Shelbi Genge), Brittannie (Robert Gallagher) and her great-grandson Benjamin.
Maxine grew up in Halifax and at the Head of St. Margaret’s Bay. She spoke fondly of these times but especially of her time spent at their summer home in Seabright. Maxine graduated from Miss Murphy’s Business College in Halifax. She worked at the Nova Scotia Power Commission at the Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, before marrying John and moving to Hubbards. After starting their family they built Scotty’s Esso Restaurant and Service Station (Hubbards), operating it for many years.
Retirement afforded Maxine and John time to travel in their motorhome and enjoy their five grandchildren, who affectionately called her Gammie. Maxine loved decorating their home for the many special occasions throughout the year, especially Christmas and birthdays. She also loved to bake birthday cakes. Anyone who knew Maxine knew she loved to shop, especially if she ran into a friend or family member and could have a little chat. While nobody could argue that she enjoyed the finer things in life like her horses, snowmobiles and in particular her sports cars, family mattered to her above all else.
The family would like to thank all those at The Windsor Elms. Their dedication, care, and friendship toward Maxine were wonderful. Special thanks, in no particular order, goes to Jennie, Trish, Dawn, Austin, Heidi, Justice, Kiya, Crystal, Jason, Christa, all the nurses on Fundyview 4, Dr. LaPierre and the many more who touched Maxine’s life with kindness. We thank you all. Her best buddies at the Elms were her card game partner Stella, her outdoor friend and neighbor Heather, as well as Betty, who visited many afternoons to enjoy her digital photo frame. These four friends all enjoyed bingo and were pleased with the many prizes they won and shared. She was always delighted to show off her new treasures. Maxine remained active attending the many regular events, church and bus trips offered by The Windsor Elms.
Maxine loved to have a chat over a cup of hot chocolate whether in person or while on the phone. In memory of her, call a friend or family member and connect while enjoying a cup of your favourite hot beverage. In lieu of flowers, if you would like, please make a donation to your local food bank or Bonny Lee Farm, Chester, NS.
The Funeral/Celebration of Life for Maxine, will be held at JA Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow, with a private family burial at a later date.
