Maxine was born on June 26, 1940, the daughter of Lucille (nee Appleton) and Maxwell Pearn. She was raised in Sussex, New Brunswick. She is predeceased by her son Howard, and husband Richard. She is survived by her brother Howard (Ruth) Pearn, her daughters Cindy (Derek Hull) and Amy, daughter-in-law Krista Trynor, grandchildren Kate and Peter Hull and Emma Trynor, and many nieces and nephews.
Maxine had a love for learning and sharing her knowledge. After obtaining her teaching certificate at Dalhousie University she taught in Newfoundland. She later returned to Halifax, where she worked in elementary schools, primarily Fairview Heights Elementary. She completed her Bachelors degree and Masters of Education at Dalhousie in the 1980s while working full-time. She was an early adopter of technology, running an extra-curricular computer club teaching kids to use the LOGO programming language. LOGO uses turtle graphics, this likely is what inspired her to get two turtles as pets for her classroom. Long after retirement the turtles were still with her!
Maxine began visiting the family cottage at Cape Brule, in Shediac, NB as a baby and returned every year, originally as a cottager then retiring there with her husband in 2005. She loved hosting family and friends and was happiest when the house was full.
Throughout her life she enjoyed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, walking with friends, playing cards, book club and volunteer work. She was a board member of Harbour City Homes in its infancy (1980s), more recently she was a member of Grandmothers for Grandmothers (Stephen Lewis Foundation).
She valued friendships and kept in touch with friends from her childhood, university days, teaching years, neighbours, and friends she met during retirement. Her friends provided vital support and joy, for which her family is very grateful.
Above all, the two things Maxine (Grandma) adored most were her grandchildren and her dogs. She was the kind of Grandma that built sandcastles, made up board games to prevent rainy day boredom and attended far away birthday parties on Skype. She lit up every time one of her grandchildren walked into the room.
