

Born March 16, 1958 in Mutare, Zimbabwe, Dr. Muchayi was the fourth born child in a family of eight children of Mr Rombai Ernest Muchayi and Mrs Wangundiani Marjorie Muchayi. He began his education in Zimbabwe and completed his high school studies in the United Kingdom. He also completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in Cuba, a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan, SK and a Doctors of Philosophy Degree in Electrical Engineering at the Technical University of Nova Scotia (now Dalhousie University) in Halifax.
Dr. Muchayi started his long teaching career in Zimbabwe at Harare Polytechnic before migrating to Canada in 1991 to pursue further education and then continuing the career he loved at the Nova Scotia Community College at the Leeds Street and Waterfront Campuses in Halifax. His students from over the years will remember him as a very firm and yet fair teacher whose first and foremost desire was always to see them succeed.
Dr. Muchayi was a man of God who never shied away from speaking of his faith in Jesus Christ. He was a man of prayer, his friends and family found strength in his steadfast faith, clear conviction and wisdom. He loved singing with his wife Shelly in his familiar, clear tenor and bass, particularly at their family church of many years, Faith Tabernacle Church in Halifax. At Faith, Dr. Muchayi served for many years in various leadership capacities including many years on the deacon board as well as leading the Sunday-School and prayer ministries.
To all who knew him, Dr. Maxwell Muchayi was a dedicated and loving father who, together with his wife Shelly committed most of their time and effort in serving their large extended family and community in Canada and Zimbabwe. Dr. Muchayi was a pillar of his family and had a big heart for his community, always lending a helping hand whenever he could. Prior to becoming a professor at the Nova Scotia Community College, Dr. Muchayi conducted after-school classes for youth at the YMCA in the north-end of Halifax for a number of years.
Dr. Muchayi was predeceased by his loving wife Shelly, his mother Wangundiani Marjorie, his sister Mavis, his brothers Barnabas and Shupikai and is survived by his only child Solomon – the apple of his eye, his father Rombai Ernest, his brother Ernest, and his sisters Mary, Tamari and Rudo, four half-brothers and three half-sisters and several cousins, nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Sunday, November 8 from 12:00 – 2:00 pm and 5:00 – 7:00 pm. The funeral service will be held on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 12:00 pm at Faith Tabernacle Church, 6225 Summit Street, Halifax, with Pastor John Cheyne officiating. Burial will be at St. John cemetery followed by a reception at the church hall. Donations can be made in his honour to the Dalit Freedom Network or Plan Canada.
