

Melvin (Mel) Leo Sampson, age 80, passed away at home in Halifax on Sunday, January 25, 2026. Mel was born in Pictou County in 1945 to Stanley and Catherine (Chisholm) Sampson. Mel was predeceased by his parents.
Mel is survived by his wife Ruby (Day), son John, Vancouver; daughter Maisie (Pat McQuarrie), East Chezzetcook; step-daughter Patricia Gaudet (Don); grandchildren Morgan White, Jessica Perks, Andy McQuarrie, Zachary Gaudet and Luke Gaudet; great-grandchildren Wyatt Gaudet and Cameron Gaudet; sisters Doreen (John) Meider, Nancy (Wayne) Tomes and Donna (Richie) Mann. Also surviving is brother-in-law Murray Day; sisters-in-law Daphne (Malcolm) Isnor and Helen (Albert) Douglas. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Mel was a proud member of Local 625 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, IBEW, for over 45 years. He worked on numerous projects throughout North America, including stints in California, Las Vegas and one of his favourites jobs, the modernization of the New York Subway system, as well as most major industrial developments which took place in Nova Scotia during his career.
Mel retired in 2014 and developed a passion for Dooly’s at Rockingham. He was quite happy and content when he was found with a pool cue in one hand and a cold beer in the other, bantering and socializing with his pool buddies, his “Dooly family”. Mel was a loyal fan of the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Blue Jays. Mel appreciated time spent with family and was rarely missing, and only when unavoidable, from family milestones and gatherings.
Funeral Service will take place at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 1 2026 at J A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax with Rev. Kevin Little officiating. A reception will immediately follow.
