Following his graduation from the University of King’s College in 1975, Michael proudly began a career of service with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), subsequently becoming an Intelligence Officer with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), both roles he deeply valued and to which he dedicated many years.
After his retirement, Mike continued to serve his community by acting as a public representative with the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, making a meaningful contribution to the people of Nova Scotia and the legal profession by ensuring that the public’s interest remained at the forefront of the Council’s work. Mike served on the Nova Scotia Electoral Boundaries Commission and was a member of the RCMP Veterans’ Association.
Beyond his career, Mike had a genuine passion for people. He was always eager to engage with others, listening to their stories, learning their history, and taking interest in what mattered most to them. He also took great joy in spending time with his wide circle of friends, whose companionship meant so much.
“Big Mike”, as he was known to many of our friends, was one of a kind. He will be remembered for his unmistakable voice, his warm and generous laughter, and the way he could light up a room. His presence left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Mike’s greatest pride, however, was his family. He was a dedicated and loving father who cherished being present in his children’s lives, always quick to celebrate their achievements and offering unwavering support through every challenge. He was a proud father to Mallory and Joshua, and a devoted stepfather to Bryce (Taylor). Mike shared an enduring bond with his former wife, Michelle. They remained close friends and exceptional co-parents, united in their love and commitment to their children.
He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Mary Baker, and his beloved son, Joshua, who passed away in 2021 at the young age of 25. They are together again, where love endures beyond this life.
Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Friday, May 1 between 2PM – 4PM and 7PM – 9PM. A funeral service will be held at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Cathedral Lane, Halifax on Saturday, May 2 at 11AM.
For those who wish, remembrances can be made to the Josh Baker Memorial Scholarship at King’s-Edgehill School or to a charity of your choice.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to friends and family – thank you for your support, messages, and encouragement.
