

Moira Dunphy, (nee Mary Anne McGonagle) was born in Moville, Donegal, Ireland on July 16, 1924. She was the second of 5 children. She studied nursing at St. George’s in the East Hospital in London, where she worked until coming to Newfoundland in the early 1950’s. She worked as a nurse with NONIA in various out port communities. She met her husband, John, McDermott (Derm) Dunphy while they were both working on Fogo Island. They raised two sons while moving across Canada, living in Saint John’s, Halifax, London, Ottawa and Edmonton. When her children were older she worked as a private nurse in Edmonton and as a full time nurse at Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax and at The Rideau Veteran’s Home in Ottawa. Moira volunteered for many years in the Camp Hill Gift Shop. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church. She enjoyed volunteering with church groups, lawn bowling, knitting, needlepoint and cooking. She is survived by her sister, Theresa, in Ireland, her husband, Derm, her sons; Paul and Tom, a granddaughter, Caitlyn and many nieces and nephews. Viewing will be Thursday, April 28, 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00pm at Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive.
