She is survived by her children Chris (Debbie), Connie (Kevin pre-deceased), Scott (Yvonne), Kerry (Jim), step-grand children Matt (Desire), Leigh, Rebecca (Katy), Shannon (El) and step-great grand children James, Sadie and Liam. She will be missed by her sister and best friend Edna/Laura (Dave), loved brother Willard (Hazel), sister-in-law Carmen and nieces and nephews in Newfoundland and Ontario.
Mom was an adventurer by nature leaving her home in Newfoundland as a young woman to enter the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1952. Her family expressed their concern about her move to Canada. Mom was independent, she hitch-hiked across the country while on leave and caught a ride in the jump seat of a military aircraft to return to duty on time. Shortly thereafter Mom met our father, Chris (pre-deceased) and while serving in the RCAF they traveled the country with their four children and dog Colonel while serving on bases in Canada and in the United States.
Mom was passionate about cooking (baking bread and other delights) and gardening when we were children, growing fruit and vegetables and canning pickles, jams, and her famous peach pear chutney. Although she never felt that way, Mom was lucky, winning many jackpots on her favorite slot machines over the years. She loved sharing her memories of Casino adventures that she experienced with her mother and sister Edna. Even in July, with her emerging health struggles, her trips to the Casino gave Mom great joy and success. Mom proudly parented caring sons and independent daughters. When her children left home, Mom became a quilter, and in her latter years she would say that quilting took over her life. Mom was generous, her beautiful quilts have been shared with family and friends, bought by many tourists and in years past given as gifts to many babies at Bryony House and other shelters. Her quilts have brought great joy and inspiration to many when she lived and will provide needed comfort now in this time of her passing. It is true that, “Every quilt evokes the maker, suggests her presence even if she is ultimately absent.”
A private memorial will be held with family. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider leaving online condolences only.
