Paul Jeffrey Murray (1936-2024), age 87 lived a full life that he shared with family and friends. He reunited with our beautiful Mother, Dana (Duggan) Murray, on July 9, 2024. Born in Halifax to Helen (Jeffries) Murray and Roy Douglas Murray, Dad grew up on Jubilee Road, attended St Thomas Aquinas School, St. Patrick’s High and St. Mary’s College. As a young boy, Dad always had a twinkle of mischief in his baby blue eyes and made many lifelong friends. Paul, PJ, Uncle Paul, Dad and Papa, he answered to all with kindness.
Dads 39-year career at CBC as a cameraman took him around the world; he worked with and met many wonderful people and had endless stories to share with anyone who would listen. Dad’s tales included crossing the Equator on the HMCS Bonaventure, visiting Alert, Nunavut with the Irish Rovers, accompanying an IWK surgical team to China, covering the launch of the Bluenose II, and participating in many Royal Visits to Halifax. Within Atlantic Canada, Dad’s camera work was seen far and wide as he contributed to numerous documentaries and news stories. One of Dad’s lasting memories was meeting and filming Maud Lewis in her Digby home where he later would bring us to meet her.
Dad was an active volunteer in his community and his faith was a great consolation to him throughout his life. He and Dana volunteered in their parish at St. Agnes Church and for Meals on Wheels. He was a member of Halifax’s Recreation Committee for numerous years, volunteered for the World Skating Championships, World Canoe Championships, and the Visit of Pope John Paul II in 1984.
Experiences that meant the most to Dad were the ones he shared with his family- summer days at Schooner Cove, camping trips and visits to the beach with the children. Dad was always the life of the party at family gatherings on Mayfield Avenue, Bedros Lane and at the Murray family cottage on lake Mush a Mush; where the door was always open.
Above all else, our Papa was a family man; in love with his wife whom he missed dearly in his last years, fiercely loyal and supportive of his children, and grandchildren. If there was a sporting event, concert, graduation or milestone – Nan and Papa would always be there to celebrate with pride.
Paul is survived by his children Lynn (Rick) Edwards, Robert, (Nancy Phillips) Murray, Jeanette McDermott; grandchildren, Jordan (Victoria Sullivan), Jillian (Alex Boyd), Abigail, Chloe and Haydn; sister Zondra Hubley, brother Doug (Marina) Murray, sister-in-law Judy Stanley, and his many nieces and nephews.
Dad was predeceased by his son in law, Dyrick McDermott. sister-in-law Joan and her husband Gerald Mills, brother-in-law Eric Duggan and his wife Kay Duggan, brothers in law Stan Stanley, Harvey Hubley, Fred Turnbull.
The family thanks the care givers who were involved in Dad’s life over the last couple of years, including the staff of the Bedford Berkley, his beloved granddaughter Chloe and Diane Moffatt who looked after him with all of her heart.
