It is with profound sadness that the family of Paulina Manahan (White) announce her peaceful passing, at home, on May 17, 2024 at the age of 84 years.
Born April 13, 1940 and growing up in a large family in Northfield, Hants County, Paulina learned the importance of close friends and family. Both were something she valued her whole life. She was always interested in her family history and , following her retirement, organized several family reunions which were always well attended.
Paulina, or Pauline as she became known when she moved to Halifax, worked in personnel for the Department of National Defence for 32 years until her retirement in 1998. In the pre-computer days time off was meticulously tracked by hand and was a time-consuming task. Pauline being Pauline still took time to get to know the men for whom she was responsible. Even after retiring she referred to them as “My Boys” and kept in touch with many of them as well as the people from her office.
This ability to connect with people lasted until her last breath. She made friends everywhere. Some were from the many winters she spent with her husband, Peter, at their winter home in Florida. Some friendships were started through on line bridge which she played for over 20 years, jigsaw puzzle exchanges and sales, yard sales, which she loved, and even a travel agency in Portugal. Just days before her passing she was chatting it up with the home care people.
Paulina will be deeply missed by her husband of 42 years, Peter, son Glenn Banks, daughter Vicki Banks (Shawn), and stepsons Peter Jr. (Kim) and Michael (Susan) as well as 4 grandsons, Erik (Kayla), Zack, Matthew and Hayden. She is also survived by sisters Ramona McQuinn, Gail McCarthy (John), Geri Bonnevie and brother Hector as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by parents Lillian (McCulloch) and Alden White, sister Alda and brothers Vance and Wilbert (Karen).
We would like to thank Northwood homecare, VON, and palliative care for the kindness and support we were shown during her last few weeks. Special thanks to Mom’s friend and neighbour, Jane Sherlock, for her help during our darkest hours.
Funeral service will be Monday May 27th at 1 PM at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, NS, B3S 0E1.
