
ROSS, Phyllis May - Died peacefully at home on June 26, 2013, at the age of 102 years and eight months. She was the only child of William and Helen Skeen of Bermuda. She came to Halifax in 1927 to attend Dalhousie University. She graduated in 1931 and then worked as a registered lab technician at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax until her marriage to Dr. Edwin Fraser Ross (1906-1999) in 1936. Phyllis was an active volunteer with the United Appeal and a Board member of the Junior League and of the IWK Childrens' Hospital Auxiliary. For many years, she was the Girls' Choir mother at the Cathedral Church of All Saints. She also served as the Senior Piano Adjudicators' secretary for the Kiwanis Music Festival for 15 years. She established and maintained the IWK Childrens' Hospital Memorial Book Fund for 20 years and in 2009 was the first person to receive a 60-year service pin from the IWK Auxiliary. Phyllis Ross is survived by her daughters, Sally Ross a
nd Janet Ross (Steven Burns); her "adopted" daughter, Deb Allen; "the son she never had", Franz Baumgartner (Vienna); grandchildren, Maggy Burns (Archie Gillis), Emma Burns (Georg Hofmann), Ross Burns (Lulu Healy), and her great-granddaughter, Maya Hofmann. The family would like to express their sincerest thanks to her wonderful caregivers, Shirley Church, Maria Negulic and Betty Casey. A reception will be held on Wednesday, July 3, from 4-6 p.m. at her home. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Dr. Edwin F. Ross Endowment Fund at the IWK Health Centre Foundation (IWK Health Centre Foundation, PO Box 9700, Halifax, NS, B3K 6R8) or to St. George's Youth Net (2222 Brunswick St., Halifax, N.S., B3K 2Z3).
