Rebecca Anne Butler

Rebecca Anne Butler, age 79, born April 10, 1937. It is with immense sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mother, grandmother, and sister, Rebecca Butler, at her home in Halifax, NS on May 25, 2016.

Rebecca (Becky) was born in Richard’s Harbour, Newfoundland to the late Ephraim & Winnifred Skinner and after their untimely death, was adopted by Mark and Caroline Whiting. She left Newfoundland in the 1950s and moved to Halifax, where she worked with Dr. & Mrs. Leonard Goldberg who, until today, treated her as a daughter and she regarded them as parents.

Becky retained much of her small village Newfoundland attitudes where caring for each other was a necessity; she valued her many friends, with whom she spoke every day just to ‘check in’. She loved to bake cakes for special occasions and often brought food to people who were sick and in need of companionship. Becky loved to laugh and had many stories. She also loved going for walks and playing in several bridge clubs.

She was very committed to her family, in fact her family was her life, and no one figured more prominently than her beloved grandchildren, Abbie and Calvin.

Becky was predeceased by her parents, twin sister Effie, brother Ephraim, her husband Jim and son Jamie. She leaves to mourn and to cherish her memory her son Marc (Joanna), grandchildren, Abbie and Calvin; sister Edna, brother Ches; sisters in-law June, Barb, Pat and her family. Plus a large circle of friends as well as nephews, nieces and family in both Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at Snow’s Funeral Home, Lacewood Drive in Halifax. Funeral will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, June 3, 2016 at Saint Benedict Church, with reception to follow in the church hall. Burial at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery on Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville to take place immediately following reception.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Becky’s name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.
