It is with profound sadness and much love that we mourn the passing of Robert LaFond of Halifax, NS, on Friday, September 9th at the age of 89. Born in Grand River, NS, on October 29, Bob was the son of the late Arthur and Jane (Pottie).
Bob left Cape Breton and moved to Halifax as a young boy where he attended St. Mary’s Boys School. Many of his fondest memories were of returning to Cape Breton for summer vacations as he had made lifelong friends there and he returned to Rockdale many times over the ensuing years. Bob spent some time working in Toronto with his big sister Eva before returning to Nova Scotia to settle down. He spent much of his professional life working with companies distributing commercial fishing supplies and eventually worked as a freight handler. He was a long time member of the Resolutes Club – participating in many activities and spent time on their Executive Committee. Bob enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participating in various sports and was a vocal supporter at many games. He is fondly remembered by many soccer players on “The Resolutes” as the Team Manager.
Bob was a superintendent with Southwest Properties for over 50 years. He loved cooking and hosted regular Sunday and holiday dinners for the family. He loved to golf and was a member at Oakfield, Hartlen Point and Brierwood, where he made two ‘hole in ones’.
He will be dearly missed and remembered by his loving wife of 56 years Gertrude (Coleman), whom he called his ‘Guardian Angel’, his daughters Kerri (Alexa) and Kimberly (Michael) and his grandchildren Luke, Josh, Ethan and Drew. He will also be missed by his sisters Eva, Aileen and Valerie. Bob was predeceased by his brothers Frederick (Ted) and Ian.
A special thank you to the many VON nurses that helped care for him. A visitation will take place on Wednesday, September 14th from 6 – 9 pm with a Memorial Service to be held at 10 am on Thursday, September 15th, with a reception to follow, both at JA Snow Funeral Home (Lacewood Drive). Burial will take place at a later date. If desired, donations can be made to the VON – Greater Halifax at von.ca.
