

On Wednesday November 6th, 2019, Ronald Harold Young, passed away peacefully with his daughter, Carole, and his son-in-law, Jeff, at his side. Papa Ron was a dedicated father, grandfather and great-grandfather when he passed away at the age of 99 ½ years.
Ron was born on April 12, 1920 in Kentville, NS. He was the son of the late Gretchen (Mosher) and Percy Young. Ron attended Aldershot School and Kentville High School. After high school, Ron graduated with a Business Certificate from Horton Academy. He and his high school friend, Edgar Spencer, hunted and fished together for many years. Ron was athletic and loved to play hockey and baseball. As a teenager, Ron joined the Kings Canadian Hussars at the Aldershot Army Camp. In 1940, he enlisted in the permanent forces in the Ordinance Division and in 1943, he went overseas to England, Belgium and Holland. On his return from overseas, he was stationed at Windsor Park, Halifax. In 1947, he went to work for Robert Simpson, which later became Sears Canada. He retired after 35 years as Manager of Accounts Payable. During his years at Sears, he bowled and played baseball on the company’s teams. Ron was also musically inclined. As a boy, he learned to play the violin. In his thirties, he started his own band called “The Top Hats”. Ron took up golf in his forties and played into his nineties. He was an avid watcher of baseball, hockey and golf. The Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs were his favourite teams. At the time of his death, Ron was a member of the Fairview Legion, Branch 142. He recently received his 50-year medal.
Ron was predeceased by his loving wife Francis Greene. They were married for 60 years. He is survived by his daughter, Carole (Jeff) Coates, granddaughter, Catherine (Bryce) Dennison, grandson, Andrew Coates (Zuleika Chan), great-grandson, Caspian Dennison and his half-sister Grace Duncan, Pinellas, Florida. The family would like to thank Linda MacLeod, of LLM Healthcare Services, and her staff who cared for Ron over the last several years. Thank you to Dr. Hebb, the nursing staff and everyone on 4 East of the Veterans Memorial Hospital, who looked after Ron during his very short stay. Cremation has taken place.
Arrangements have been entrusted to JA Snows Funeral Home. A reception to celebrate Papa’s life will be held for family and friends. It will take place on Friday, November 15th, 2019 between 2-4pm at Snows Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, NS. A committal will be held in Brookside Cemetery with Rev. Jim Anderson at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ron’s name can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or a charity of choice. Papa Ron was a kind and gentle soul, who always expressed his gratitude to everyone. He will be missed.
