Born on September 10, 1928, to Ethel and Harry Turner, Roy was a lifelong resident of the North End of Halifax. After graduating from Queen Elizabeth High School, he started working as an apprentice electrician for Carter & Smith Electrical. Roy enjoyed a long career as an electrician, electrical inspector, and teaching Electrical Construction Wiring at the Dartmouth Regional Vocational School.
He is survived by his children, Suzanne Turner, Cathy (Charles) Walls, and Andrew (Heather) Turner, his sisters in-law Ada Pinsent and Nancy (Lloyd) MacLeod, his grandchildren, Matthew (Rachael), Hilary (Shawn), Jaclynn (Kyle), Jeffrey (Ashton) and Benjamin, his great grandchildren Madeline, Angus, Nora and Luca as well as many nieces, nephews, close friends and neighbours. He was predeceased by the love of his life and devoted wife of 67 years Kay, his parents, his sister Joan and her husband Alvin Thorne and brothers in law Murray Burt and Clarence Pinsent.
Roy was curious, hardworking, devoted and kind. He was always there to share his wisdom, teach a lesson and support the people he loved. Roy enjoyed the simple things in life, especially woodworking, reading and spending time at the cottage (or as he would say “down the country”) enjoying sun rise swims, going out in the boat, spending time with his family, taking long walks to the crossroads with Kay and stopping to chat to the neighbours along the way. Roy had a life-long interest in airplanes that started with his time as an air cadet, one of his proudest moments was when his eldest grandson Matthew was in Flight school and was able to bring Roy on a flight with him. Right down to his very last days, a cup of coffee and a good chat could always put a smile on Roy’s face. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Roy will be truly missed by so many.
Our family will be forever grateful to everyone at Arborstone Enhanced Care for the love and support they showed Roy in his final days, especially the 2nd floor staff and his roommate Dan. They listened to his stories, laughed at his jokes, and kept him company when we couldn’t.
The family will be accepting visitors Friday, January 20th at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive in Halifax, from 1:30pm-3:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lake City Works
